I don't know what a shader baker is, but I keep on clicking that button, because who doesn't love a shader cake?

Contrast

Contrast is a monochrome metroidvania involving light, shadows, and getting lost in the dark built in Godot.

The Idea

I was once doodling in my journal and I made a cute little character that I liked. I was like, “hey I should put that into a video game!”. So I started to draw different iterations of it digitally, but one block I kept running into was that I wasn’t sure how to add color to it, because I always doodle in black and white. After thinking about that for quite a bit, I decided, “you know what? I don’t even need color, I’ll just make a completely monochrome game!” (not a real quote, but basically my train of thought). I eventually landed on a version that I drew in GIMP and animated using Skeleton2D in Godot. So at this point I had a character and… nothing else, but that was enough to build off of.

The Development

I knew I would be making the game in Godot from the start, because my computer would die if I tried running Unreal Engine, and I don’t know how to use Unity. After making the character I basically made the rest of the game as I went, adding bits of terrain, playing with shaders, and all of that fun stuff.

What I learned

Making this game felt very spiritual for me. I even started to have dreams set in the world of the game. And I learned SO MUCH. I feel like I was having to google something every other minute, but that’s okay because of the sheer amount of information I took in.

Overall

This was such an amazing journey and process, especially documenting my progress in Stardance. Whoever is reading this, thank you for rating my project!!!

Devlog #4: Possibly the final devlog!!

Wow, I apologized for the length of the last devlog, and here I am with a 7 hour one!! :birbfacepalm: The time just keeps on ticking… A lot has changed since the last devlog so bear with me.
Improvements: I’ve added a source button to the title screen that redirects to the Github :github: . There is now a pause menu when you press escape that can quit to the main menu. I successfully made the “unstable zone”, so there is a bar at the top of the hud that moves back and forth depending on whether the player is inverted or not. The idea is that you have to balance between light and dark. If the bar gets to one end, you get damaged every one second. :ooh:
Additions: I added a death animation so death actually happens now instead of an error that says you can’t have negative health :deadcube: . I also added a portal to go between levels and a whole second level with gpu particle rain!! :rain_cloud-magic_wand: I also improved the GameManager’s level switching so it’s much more adaptive now. There is also now an end, as this is just a demo.
Bug fixes: Most bugs I had to fix were from the new additions and didn’t exist in the previous version of the game. So idk :dance_catgirl:

In other news…

I have the game published on itch.io!!!!!
Pleasepleaseplease check it out and leave a nice comment if you are capable!! 🙏 :sparkles_mtnt_rmx: :sparkling-blahaj-heart:

expect a ship soon and i love all of you guys sosososo much thank you everyone for an amazing event ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Devlog #3: Visual fx galore :sparkles_mtnt_rmx:

Hello everyone! I apologize for doing such a long devlog, but those hours really slip by :heheh:
Without further ado: let’s jump into it
Improvements: I’ve added a few more moving elements to the terrain, but I’ve been mostly focusing on gameplay instead of actual length at this point. I also made the title screen look better and the “quit” button actually quit. I made the life counter actually work :yay: , for now it only goes down when you fall off the edge of something. You reset to the last safe place you were standing.
Additions: I was having fun playing with shaders and added a glitch effect to the character when you enter/exit an inverted zone :ablobglitch: I also added a ripple shader that has no purpose at the moment but it will don’t worry :hehehands:
No bug fixes this time :dance_moss:

What’s Next:

Next I am planning on using that ripple shader to make sort of a “unstable zone” where you have to balance between light and dark. Stardance is ending soon though :cry-wx: :stardance-streak-3d: so we’ll see how much is done when I ship

Devlog #2: Terrain, shaders, and a really annoying bug :avocado-spider:

Improvements: I made the terrain much more flexible by using seperate objects that I could just place wherever, instead of the tilemap, but that was really just for showing that the character worked. Also I made a moving element.

Additions: I added a title screen, a life counter (not implemented yet, but it’s there :smile-hole: ), and a shader that inverts colors. The shader will probably be involved in a gameplay thingy later, but for now, it’s just to look nice. Making the shader was really hard, actually :face_holding_back_tears-hole: even though it was really simple…

Bug Fixes: Sooo I was going to post this devlog yesterday, but then I realised that my whole scene loading everything was horrible and some really weird things happened. SO I spent another hour and a half fixing it :neofox_floof_sad: . HOWEVER I did also learn some valuable lessons, and made a GameManager, so I don’t think it was a complete waste

What’s Next

Next up will be making the title screen look more interesting, and I have some ideas for game mechanics and new characters that I will explore.

Stay tuned! (or not :sad-apple: )

Devlog #1: Back With a New Project

What’s up folks! :haii: I am back with another project, having shipped the vent alien. This is a monochrome metroidvania involving light, shadows, and getting lost in the dark :godot: . (Clearly still need to figure out some lore)
However, I finished drawing, rigging, and animating the main character in this devlog. I also made some mediocre background graphics to show the character moving.

What’s Next

Mainly worldbuilding, which will take a while. I am also planning on making a neat banner for the project!

stay tuned!! :meow-party:

The Vent Alien

The Story

I was in Portland on a trip, and I was walking through the Rebuilding Center, looking for inspiration. I came upon a suspiciously cheap vent. I contemplated this vent and began to have visions of what it could be - if I pried apart the slats and had something that came out of it…. So I bought the vent and went happily back home. Later on I was searching for a 3D model to print for this mysterious creature.

After searching “alien” and scrolling through like 10 pages of aliens from Alien (the movie), I found it. The singing alien from Spaceballs! And then I knew that I had to make a singing vent alien.

How It’s Made

I designed and 3D printed quite a few clips and holders to hold the alien and an SG90 servo. I designed a mechanism that made the motion of the alien moving out of the vent in the way I envisioned it - kind of like jumping, kind of crawling. Because it’s what I had lying around, I used an Arduino Uno to control the whole thing. I added red LEDs for the eyes, and I used a DFRobot DFPlayer Mini to play the song that the alien sings in the movie. I wanted the alien to look like it was dancing instead of just moving statically. I achieved this effect by connecting one of the DFPlayer’s analog outputs to the analog input of the Arduino and mapping the signal to servo angles. To pull everything together, I built a shadow box around the back and added a button to trigger the movement.

What I Learned and What Was Challenging

I hadn’t used Arduino for a while before this project, so it was fun to relearn some of the syntax and quirks. I actually had never used an analog pin on an Arduino before this project, and I learned that it’s not great to connect something to one without a limiting circuit. I also learned that it’s always important to measure like 40 times before printing a part. I had to do a bit of drilling. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Overall this was a super fun project, and I think the best lesson I learned from it is that a project doesn’t have to have a purpose; heck, it can be the absolute stupidest thing ever. The part that matters is that it brings us joy, and this project definitely did that for me.

The final devlog…

Hardware:
I built a shadow box out of black poster board to put around the back of the alien, which I feel like gives it a sense of cohesiveness and gives it a nice background. I also wasted a heck of a lot of time caulking it to the vent for like no reason at all :sad-cat-thumbs-up: . I also added a button to trigger it so you don’t have to reset the board or plug it in every time you need to dazzle someone.

Software: :coding:
Only a bit of software this time. Just a few lines of code for the button and I also made a wiring diagram and made my README much better.

Time to ship!!! :shipitparrot:

Devlog #4: it’s coming together…

Software:
The main coding thing in this devlog was figuring out how to make the alien actually look like it’s dancing instead of just moving in and out of the vent. I did this by routing the DFPlayer’s left DAC channel into the Arduino’s A0 pin and mapping those values to the servo motor. This worked better than I expected so now it can hit some moves
Hardware:
I reprinted the alien at finer quality and painted it. I also added LEDs for eyes which is wonderful :sparkles_mtnt_rmx:

What’s next

I feel like this project is almost ready to ship which is very exciting! The only things to do are to clean up the wiring so it’s one cohesive unit and I am thinking of building a shadow box around the back with some RGB lighting. All in all, one or two more devlogs till we ship!! :hype_hollow:
Until next time…

Devlog #3: We Have Action!! :yayayayayay:

Finally got down to writing some code and doing some wiring! I’m using a DFRobot DFPlayer Mini (long name ik) for the sound because it’s an alien, of course it has to sing. I went with the original song from the Spaceballs movie which I learned is actually from a really old cartoon. Fun stuff.
Anyway stay tuned folks! :bye:

P.S. watch this video with sound on! ↴

Devlog #2: A little more designing and putting some things together

I finished designing the parts and put everything together. I ended up using a sacrificed clipboard for the baseplate. Everything worked exactly how it did in the model which made me happy because my 3d modeling skills are not the best.

What’s next:

Next I need to get the code figured out, add LEDs to the eyes, and I think I will probably re print the alien at a higher quality and paint it. It would also be fun to add an ultrasonic sensor and have it trigger when someone walks past.

Too bad my parents won’t let me cut a hole in my wall for it :skulk:

Devlog #1: Designing!

I basically designed the mechanism for moving the alien in and out of the vent. And I 3d printed the parts and weathered the vent :thumbs-up:

This is my personal website. I made it with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript using VScode. It has five sections:

  • About
    • Basically just information about me
  • Projects
    • Some of my main projects and a (very) brief description of them
  • WhatAmIDoingRN
    • My hackatime stats and a thing to tell whether I am sleeping or not
  • Say Hi!
    • My contact info
  • Stardance
    • A section describing what Stardance is with links to it and Hackclub’s website

I had never done web dev before this project so it was kind of a learning curve. I found that HTML and CSS are really fun, but JavaScript is really difficult. The most confusing part was how things aren’t placed absolutely only relatively. All in all, this was a really fun project that I plan to keep updated in the future.

Devlog #3: looking fine!! 🦋

Thing 1: I drew myself a logo!! :yay: I’m not great at drawing so this made me happy. So I made the logo the icon. which is great.

Thing 2: I rewrote my whole bio to make it more fun and such things.

More things: I made the line spacing taller. It just looks a little nicer now. I also used a tiny bit of JavaScript to make an animated kaomoji :thumbs-up:

Devlog #1: Add Content and General Layout

Basically, I taught myself web dev in 2 hours, so at this point, it’s obviously not super polished. But I just made it look pretty and added some of the things I want it to say in the end. (Idk if we’re actually supposed to do devlogs for missions but here we are). You can visit the website at: a-fun-gi.github.io. I also wanted to add a little javascript so I made a thing that guesses what I’m doing at a particular time of day.
