@zahran on Stardancer (formerly Unnamed Platformer)
For HackClub Stardance, I created Stardancer, a 30-level platformer featuring a unique mechanic: mid-level shapeshifting to unlock new abilities and powers! I used C++ and SFML (the Simple and Fast Multimedia Library) to code this game.
During the development of this game, I ran into a couple of technical challenges. Collision was among the biggest; I had initially decided on AABB (Axis-Aligned Bounding Box) collision, but after implementing that I realized that it led to erroneous collision interactions, misalignments, and more issues. So, I switched to SAT (Separating Axis Theorem) collision instead. This, combined with general collision response logic, made coding collision one of the hardest endeavours of this project. There were many other challenges throughout development, however none are too disruptive to the experience of the final game. I’m still extremely proud of myself and this project for many reasons:
- This is the largest project I’ve ever made;
- Despite many challenges, bugs, and pieces of complex logic to work through, I made a fully functional and complete game;
- I managed to make this with no external engines;
- I was able to use my C++ and new SFML skills to create something I can proudly say I made!
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR REVIEWERS!! PLEASE READ!!!
A complete playthrough of the game takes a large amount of time due to how levels are structured: to play a level, you must beat the level before it, which poses an issue for one of the shapes which is only unlocked in the last set. I realize most reviewers do not have the time required to play through the full game and gain a complete understanding of its features. For this reason, I strongly urge reviewers to skim through/watch my full walkthrough video linked in my README, as well as check out the “Credits Easter Egg” section in that video. Playing through all 30 levels sequentially takes time, but you can unlock every level directly from the Credits screen so you can test all shape powers hands-on right away! This way, a reviewer will be able to understand the scope and gameplay of the game in a short amount of time.
With that being said, I truly hope you enjoy my game.
