Welcome, reader! At last, the ship to VSEPR Predictor. My name’s Lucky!
What is VSEPR Predictor?
VSEPR Predictor is , as stated in my previous devlogs, “a (mainly python) project that uses VSEPR Theory– aka Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory– to predict the shapes/geometries of given molecules”. The following is a bulleted list of all of the features of this Predictor:
This project, at its state at the moment of writing:
This project, at its state at the moment of writing:
- Counts Valence Electrons of the inputted molecule (mendeleev assist).
- Accounts for charges on molecules and taking that into consideration while calculating Valence Electrons.
- Error checks / parses the user’s input to only allow valid molecules.
- Calculates electronegativities of constituent elements (using mendeleev) and determining the central atom of the molecule.
- Parses the molecule to find its elements and subscripts.
- Calculates electron groups / steric number.
- Calculates lone pairs around the central atom.
- Reforms the molecule in VSEPR form: AX_mE_n.
- Searches through a dictionary/table of all of the permutations of VSEPR form in order to fetch appropriate data.
- Interacts with the user in order to act as an educational tool.
-
Utilizes aesthetic and UX design in order to create a website to capture all of this.
-Models the molecules with an interactive view using 3DMol.js.
This is not nearly an exhaustive list . . . But you get the point! :)
Experiences
With this project, there were hard times, there were good times. It was a whole long journey. Sometimes there were really some elements that I thought were absolute garbage. But at the end of the day, I coded. I did something I hadn’t done before. I grew and I could see the change. From the plain old terminal command line to an actual functioning website. It’s unrecognizable comparison: that’s proof of the growth in itself.
Conclusions
I’m glad I did this project: getting out of my comfort zone. As said by Roy T. Bennett: “ . . . You don’t have to have it all figured out to move forward.” Anyway, check out my GitHub, Su4o for forking my repo, my website (which may be slow due to free hosting :( ). Happy Halloween, Happy Holidays, Happy Times. Goodbye readers; I hope you inch towards your goals every . . . single . . . day.
