OrbitOS is my own web-based operating system built from scratch with React, TypeScript, and Vite. I designed the OS structure, window system, desktop environment, applications, filesystem, settings, themes, and overall UI.

The goal of OrbitOS is to make a fully interactive operating-system-style experience that runs directly in a web browser. It includes draggable windows, apps, a desktop, taskbar, launcher, file system, settings, notes, terminal, calculator, browser-style tools, themes, workspaces, and other system features.

I also built the project with a future downloadable desktop version in mind, while keeping the WebOS version and desktop version separated. The WebOS version contains the web-specific account and login features, while the desktop version uses its own local identity and storage system.

OrbitOS Settings & PersonalizationWhat’s New?I worked on the OrbitOS Settings experience and continued improving the overall look of the WebOS interface.Settings gives users a central place to control and personalize their OrbitOS experience instead of having system options spread across different applications.I also started adding more color throughout the interface while keeping the OrbitOS design consistent. I focused on areas such as windows, menus, buttons, taskbar elements, system controls, and selected states. What Was Challenging? The biggest challenge was adding more personality and color without making the interface feel messy.I wanted OrbitOS to have its own visual identity while still keeping the interface easy to read and navigate.I also had to make sure the changes worked across the different applications instead of only changing one screen. What I LearnedI learned that a consistent theme system is important when building an operating-system-style interface. Small changes to colors, buttons, windows, and menus can affect the entire user experience.Current StatusThe WebOS version is the main playable version and is being prepared for public testing. The downloadable computer software is still unfinished and under development. I am continuing to build the desktop version separately from the WebOS account system.

Devlog 1 — OrbitOS Login ScreenWhat’s New?I worked on the OrbitOS WebOS login screen and the startup experience. The goal was to make OrbitOS feel like an actual operating system from the moment it opens instead of immediately dropping the user onto the desktop. The login experience gives WebOS its own identity and creates a clear starting point before entering the operating system. What Was Challenging?I had to make the login system work with the rest of the WebOS interface while keeping the account features separate from the future downloadable computer version.ResultOrbitOS now has a dedicated WebOS login/startup experience that leads into the operating system. The desktop/computer version is still unfinished and is being developed separately.
