I finally got all the real book covers rendering perfectly on the 3D shelf for Stardance Hack Club. I had a frustrating bug earlier where the whole shelf vanished because my JavaScript was trying to apply color math to the spine text before the text element even existed, but I reordered the logic and fixed the crash. I also stripped out the heavy CSS filters so the cover art looks exactly like the original image files now instead of being artificially darkened. Since I am manually coloring the spines in my JSON data, I wrote a quick script that calculates the brightness of those hex codes and automatically flips the title text to black or white so it never gets lost in the background. I wrapped it up by cleaning up the CSS for the metadata so the author and rating stats stay in a neat, straight line above the reviews.
i made a lot of progress last couple of days cleaning up my bookshelf code by moving the book generation logic into a new book.js file, which made it way easier to load real cover images directly from my JSON data. I had to use AI to figure out the 3D book animation because the math was really hard, but now the spine and cover finally open naturally without clipping through each other. To make the books look more realistic, I also blended the paper texture right into the cover art and added a crease shadow that fades in inside the spine when a book is clicked open. I wrapped it up by building a continuous hover-scroll loop for the navigation arrows, so the shelf just pans smoothly the whole time my mouse is resting on them.
i wanted to add this paper like texture in the books which took a lot of time, im thinking of changing the overall color palate of the website to make it look more vintage. also took a lot of time off, gotta continue working now.
The basic structure of my bookshelf along with some css styling is done, a lot of work is still left
I started working on a new project today, an interactive bookshelf where i can share books I’ve read and my reviews.
Today I got the project setup done, created the Github repo and finished the HTML layout.
Tomorrow I’ll start working on CSS file and will start building the actual bookshelf and the first book. Hopefully I’ll have something to show tomorrow.
