An app that shows nearby pickleball courts and how many people are present in each court. It has features to add friends, and even create polls to make pickleball experience an all in one.

Update: fixed bugs and improved the sound detection algorithm so it accurately captures the hits, I am still wondering on how to make this really accurate so any suggestions would be helpful.

I updated it to now RallyLab. I did this because initially i had an app to find open pickleball courts near me in Tampa. It worked, but I realized you really only use a court finder once. You check it, drive there, and that’s it. So I’ve been rebuilding it into RallyLab. The idea is simple: put your phone on the bench and let it listen to your match.
Instead of recording the match, the new app -RallyLab- just detects racket hits and the words you say like serves etc to detect who got the point. The audio gets processed 128 samples at a time and immediately overwritten, so there is no recording or audio file. I am going to spend more time on this and make it a full on product people can use.

🟢 Quick Update on Picklewatch 🟢.

The hit detector is working pretty well now. I tested it with simulated gym noise, talking, shoe squeaks, and another court playing nearby, and 9/11 conditions got an F1 of at least 0.93. I also added badminton, tennis, pickleball, squash, and table tennis, along with their different scoring rules. There are also 393 tests passing.

The biggest thing I’m working on now is automatic score tracking. I originally planned to have players tap who won each rally, but nobody is going to do that during a game. Since players already say the score out loud, I’m using that instead. Speech recognition by itself is only around 73% accurate, but because there are only a few legal scores that can follow each score, an HMM + Viterbi decoder can bring that up to around 96–100%. I said its almost ready but I am trying to make it realible for an athlete to trust.

Then I found a weird problem. The server’s score is always said first, so the microphone can know the score is 5-3 but can’t know which team is serving. That leaves two possibilities at exactly 50/50. I’m working on speaker ID now, but I’m using it as a probability instead of a hard rule so one mistake doesn’t ruin everything.
Next is getting the score system into the UI, finishing speaker ID, figuring out the iOS audio situation, and testing it in a real gym. So far all my testing has been simulated. If it can’t handle six courts playing at once, then I have a much bigger problem. Maybe in the future, once i get the grant from hackclub to buy a licence for playstore, the app might fucntion more efficiently than a web app.

PickleWatch, an App for Pickleball Athletes

So basically the problem is there’s like 8 pickleball courts around Tampa and you never know which ones are actually free or if they’re packed until you drive there and it’s a whole thing. So I made an app that tells you before you leave your house.

It’s a website (kinda like an app, you can add it to your home screen) that shows all 8 courts and how busy each one probably is right now. It’s not just guessing randomly either — I made it learn the normal pattern for each court (like Northlakes gets crazy busy around 6pm on weekdays but High 5 is more of a lunchtime thing) and then it mixes that with actual people checking in. Like if you show up and tap “I’m here” and say how busy it is, that updates everyone’s app in real time for like 90 minutes and then it fades away.

The real time part is honestly the coolest part, I used this thing called Supabase which is like a free database that can push updates instantly. I tested it by opening two browser windows side by side and checking in on one and watching it show up on the other one immediately, no refreshing or anything.

Other stuff it does:

Rally button — pick a time and it makes a message you can send to your group chat on WhatsApp asking who wants to play
Polls — like if people can’t decide where to play you make a poll and everyone votes and you can see it update live
Friends — add your friends and it’ll show you when they check in somewhere, plus little avatar bubbles showing who’s at a court right now
No login or password or anything, you just type your name once and that’s it. Didn’t want to deal with accounts for something this small.

Everything’s free too — Supabase has a free plan and I’m hosting it on Vercel which is also free, so it’s not costing me anything to run.

Love Pickleball?? Check this out! I just made an app that tracks nearby pickleball courts and estimates how many people are on them, so the user can save time and play more efficiently when they get there. I have also created a feature for polls and for adding your crew to the friends list, so you can decide when to play the sport at your convenience. Please take a look at my screenshots below
