@Philipe_P on Lumen
Lumen is an assistive communication application designed to make communication more accessible for people who have difficulty speaking. The goal is to reduce the friction between a person knowing what they want to communicate and actually being able to communicate it.
Lumen provides multiple ways to create and speak messages, including a communication board, keyboard input, and gesture-based controls. This gives users different ways to interact with the application depending on their individual needs.
The project has been actively developed for multiple hours, including significant work on the desktop application, user interface, gesture recognition, speech output, communication-board functionality, local phrase storage, and the overall user experience. I also built the project as a usable Windows application rather than leaving it as a prototype that only runs in a development environment.
Lumen includes several major quality-of-life improvements:
-
Multiple input methods: Users can communicate through buttons, keyboard input, or gesture controls rather than being restricted to one interaction method.
-
Gesture-based communication: Users can select communication buttons using gesture input and activate the selected button with a simple gesture, providing an alternative interaction method for users who may have difficulty using a traditional interface.
-
Faster and more convenient communication: Lumen includes frequently needed phrases and communication-board options, along with saved phrases and text-to-speech output, reducing the number of steps required to produce spoken communication.
The project focuses on making an existing everyday task—communicating—less complicated and more accessible. I have put substantial development effort into turning the idea into a functional application that can actually be used and tested.
