I made the Stormy-9, a macropad designed for simplicity. It has 16 programmable keys separated out by 2 layers, an adjustable knob for volume and brightness control, and an OLED display showing off your WPM!

Interestingly, I found the most challenging part of this project was designing the case. When designing, I took inspiration from my current keyboard, the KBD-75.

The project isn't physically built yet, but I will post on here the second it is. I look forward to seeing this brought to reality! This journey has definitely inspired me to pursue building full-fledged hand-wired keyboards.

(Even though it says 23 minutes, this is supposed to fix the error where 2.5 hours were unaccounted).

I spent these 2.5 hours learning QMK and programming the Stormy 9’s firmware.

The current features are:

  • 16 programmable keys.
  • 2 Keyboard Layers
  • An adjustable knob for volume and brightness.
  • An OLED display that shows off WPM and a static picture of my cat.

Future Features:

  • Display the current key being pressed on the OLED
  • More utility and quality of life features. I need to spend some time researching what people really value in a good macropad.

The 23 minutes being logged right now were spent buffing up the README file. I added the resources I utilized during the design and my thought process.

I look forward to building the actual thing!

Finally finished the initial model of the Stormy 9! Because of Fusion refusing to import models (I tried importing a KICAD 3D model of the PCB to utilize the footprint 3D models to simplify case design), I used Blender instead, which was a nightmare of its own. However, everything seems look great! This project has definitely inspired me to start researching hand-wiring full keyboards. PS, I have more like 5-6 hours logged for this, but Hackatime didn’t pick up the time I did in Blender and KICAD.
