Overview:
I made a simple endless platformer game that is based in space. The main character is an astronaut. The astronaut bounds through space on asteroid platforms.
Objective:
You have to use the SPACE button to jump. You are also allowed a double jump if you need to reach far. Make sure you don't fall through the gaps, as your run will end. The goal is quite simple: You have to get the highest score you can. The game will automatically save your highest score in a particular session, so you can challenge yourself to beat your best.
Easy Part:
I think setting up the basic layout of sprites and platforms was quite easy, as the mechanisms were not quite complicated for this game. It was also quite easy to build and upload it for public view.
Hard Part:
I think the hardest parts were trying to refine it and polish it up. The most time-consuming part was definately the artwork. which is also why I used the assistance of AI to help me save some time. I think space is so beautiful, and I really wanted to showcase that in the artwork of my game with vibrant colors and mesmerizing designs, so it made the artwork process really long. Another tricky part was mastering the feel of the platform generation. I first had to measure the arc of my player's bounce and then build the platforms around that while trying not to make it too easy or too hard. I wanted to have a floaty feel to my character's bounce to simulate a microgravity environment, so it was tricky to build platforms around that.
Overall:
I had initially planned for this project to take me like a weekend to finish, but it ended up taking almost over a week. Even if it took a lot of time, I am really proud of how it turned out. It is one of the first fully developed games that I have published for the public as well. I have had some experience with 2D platformers in the past, and I think this project brought all of that together to form a polished and fun game to play. I really wanted to have like chill and ambient kind of mood, and I thing the final product really embodies that. I hope you enjoy it!!!
