Horizon I is a “two-stage”, FAA Class 2 high-power rocket designed to reach an apogee of 4,400 meters (4.4 km). Its mission is to climb under powered flight, rotate to a horizontal attitude near apogee, capture the horizon on camera, and land safely near the launch site.
One big booster lifts Horizon I off the pad. At booster burnout, the booster separates, and the center motor ignites to carry the rocket higher. After the center motor burns out, the rocket coasts to apogee, where it rotates horizontally and points the onboard camera at the horizon and sky. Parachutes then deploy for a soft descent and landing near the launch area.
Horizon I is designed to meet applicable ATF and FAA regulations. Before launch, all required waivers, notifications, and forms will be submitted to the fire department, police department, air traffic control, and the local FAA office (and Homeland Security where applicable). Launch will proceed only after all approvals are confirmed.
